The Chantecaille Family

Chantecaille was built through the collaboration of a whole family. Sylvie is the creator of Chantecaille and has more than 30 years of experience, making her one of the industry’s foremost innovators. Her daughter Olivia is the Creative Director and develops the brand’s unique and modern products, while also driving the brand’s vision from a marketing perspective. Alex, another daughter, is the Vice President of Sales and Promotions, travelling around the world to promote the brand. Sylvie’s son, Philippe is the Director of Media Productions and brings his love of art and photography to create the brand’s imagery. Sylvie’s husband, Olivier Chantecaille, is the company’s Chief Financial Officer and combines his business success with a passion for protecting the environment.

The innovation behind Chantecaille

The brand turns to everything from superpowered botanicals to plant stem cells to provide the sustainable ingredients that produce their scientifically backed results. Innovative powers everything that Chantecaille does. Chantecaille works with laboratories around the globe to use cutting edge technology and high-quality ingredients to create revolutionary formulas that have gained the brand an international reputation.

Beauty with results

At the heart of Chantecaille is the idea of ‘beauty with results’, recognising the potential of botanical ingredients to revolutionise skincare. After discovering a field of Rose de Mai in Grasse, Sylvie discovered the potential of rosewater as an anti-aging ingredient. Rosewater has become a key ingredient for the brand as a natural protective ingredient that gives impactful, beautiful, and visible results.

Chantecaille’s philanthropy

Philanthropy is at the heart of everything that Chantecaille does. The brand believe that it’s not enough to just create the perfect formulations. It strives to connect, educate, and provide support for conservation efforts around the global. Every season the brand aligns their products with a cause that needs a vocal platform. Chantecaille has partnered with causes that protect everything from our oceans to our forests, lions, and gorillas.

Chantecaille’s commitments

Environmental philanthropy began as a passion for Sylvie Chantecaille before becoming a 20-year-long commitment that is now at the heart of the brand. It started after her love for gardening led her to discover the crisis of the disappearing Monarch butterflies, which led to the brand’s first philanthropy partnership.

Here is a round up of some of the causes that are at the heart of the brand’s environmental philanthropy.

• Coral Reefs

Among the most diverse ecosystems on earth, and a key indicator of ocean health. Our coral reefs are extremely fragile and in danger due to climate change, industrial fishing and pollution, including from beauty products like chemical sunscreen. Chantecaille’s reef-safe SeaScreen 30 supports WildAid Marine’s work to strengthen the protection of Tanzania’s Pemba Channel.

• Butterflies & Other Pollinators

Butterflies, bees, and other pollinators help ecosystems thrive—but are declining at an alarming rate. Chantecaille is supporting the Xerces Society, which works to conserve invertebrates and their habitats by regenerating native landscapes, in turn promoting a vibrant food system.

• Orphaned Elephants

Chantecaille’s Future Skin Cushion Foundation supports their longtime conservation partners Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in orphaned elephant rehabilitation program and work safeguarding natural habitats for all species across Kenya. Every cushion foundation helps feed an orphan baby elephant rescued by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. 1 cushion foundation = 1 bottle of milk.

• Africa's Vanishing Species

The brand’s Luminescent Eye Shades were created to support six of Africa’s most endangered species: the rhinoceros, cheetah, giraffe, elephant, lion and pangolin. All of these wild animals face the threat of disappearing habitats, conflict with humans, including illegal poaching.

• African Elephants

Chantecaille created their Lip Veil in support of their longtime partner Space for Giants. It supports their vital work protecting African elephants, the landscapes they depend on, and the community near them. These wild species and spaces face unprecedented threats from the global pandemic and economic crisis.

• Vibrant Oceans

In July 2019, WildAid invited Chantecaille to Isla Mujeres, an island in Mexico where whale sharks in summer. This unique trip gathered conservation activists to experience their magnificent beauty up close, and to bring attention to the growing crisis of the illegal wildlife trade.

• Amazon Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds are a symbol of a healthy Amazon and biodiversity. Protecting the hummingbird is vital for the health of the planet and all of us who live on it. With the brand’s limited-edition Lip Chic, they’re raising $75,000 to help the ASOMI indigenous women’s association buy back 75 acres of their Amazon home.

• One Lipstick, One Tree

The Holiday Lip Chics by Chantecaille support the work of fighting climate change. For each lipstick sold, Chantecaille will plant a tree in Kenya with Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Their partners have been planting saplings around national parks and forests that they manage in Kenya to protect habitat and support local communities. Together with SWT, Chantecaille planted 60,000 trees in 2019.

• Asian Elephants

Asian elephants face similar threats from shrinking wilderness and runaway human population growth as their African cousin. Chantecaille partnered with Elephant Family on a limited-edition Lip Veil to help protect the Asian elephant from extinction in the wild.

• Philanthropy Cheek Shades Collection

This collection of cheek shades features six embossed compacts that benefit the conservation efforts for Monarch butterflies, which kick-started the brand’s passion for philanthropy and protecting endangered species. It also includes supporting other environmental causes, like protecting the coral reef.

About the founder of Chantecaille

Now that you’ve had an insight into Chantecaille and its philanthropic efforts, it’s only right that we turn the attention on the woman behind the brand – Sylvie Chantecaille. She began by studying history of art and theatre in Paris before moving to New York, where she created her first cosmetic company in partnership with her friend, Diane von Furstenberg. The cult-favourite perfume, Tatiana, was part of the cosmetic range.
In the late 1970s, the Lauder family came to Sylvie and asked her to launch a new beauty brand – Prescriptives – which took a new approach to cosmetics. She led some of the most exciting innovative developments at the brand, including launching the best-selling fragrance, Calyx.
Sylvie describes how she fell into the beauty industry by accident. It was the success of her fragrance with DVF that led her to further explore the potential within the industry.

The concept for Chantecaille was to create a niche French fragrance house that offered four original scents, each based on natural essential oils. Within 18 months, Sylvie realised that her passion was in aromatherapy, high-quality skincare, and natural products. Her goal was to make products that made women feel beautiful, while also being healthy for their skin.

What makes Chantecaille unique and different

What makes Chantecaille stand out from the ground is its commitment to high-quality ingredients and pure formulas. The brand is committed to sourcing the most effective botanical ingredients and working with experts to create tailored products. Chantecaille is a truly international brand – they develop their foundations in Japan, skincare in Switzerland, and produce their fragrance in France. When Chantecaille started, no one was working on products that were both backed by science and powered by botanical ingredients at the same time.

Philanthropy and conservation is at the forefront of everything that the company does. Since 2006, the brand has launched 29 different limited edition Philanthropy Collections with the aim of benefiting specific conservation efforts. Every season, the brand donates a percentage of proceeds form the sales of these products directly to the charitable organisations.

Chantecaille is a luxury beauty brand that is changing the industry from within. More of us than ever are choosing to prioritise sustainability and environmental issues when choosing which brands to support. When you buy a Chantecaille item, you know that your product is fuelled with natural and sustainable ingredients, while often directly helping important conservation work that can make a major difference for the world around.
