The History of Clarins

Clarins is a beauty brand that proudly carries the ‘made in France’ tagline. It was launched on March 15 1954 by Jacques Courtin-Clarins when he opened his first Clarins Institute, focused on the belief that your physical well-being and happiness are linked to your beauty.  Clarins came to the market at the same time as celebrities began to appear on the cover of magazines.

Clarin’s first landmark product, the Body Shaping Cream, hit the market in 1962, streamlining contours and shapes of the body to eliminate cellulite. In 1968, Clarins made the decision to add customer cards inside the packaging upon the suggestion of employees.
What is extraordinary is that Jacques Courtin-Clarins was a medical student when he founded Clarins. He was actively involved with Clarins until his death in 2007, with his son Christian taking over as chairman of Clarins in 2000.

As a French skincare brand, Clarins was greeted with almost immediate success. The mission of Clarins has always been to listen to the needs of women and create safe and natural skin care products that are highly effective. Clarins joined the Paris Stock Exchange in 1984, showing just how successful the brand had become.
What made Clarins an overnight success is that it was the fist brand to release face and body treatments that include formulas made exclusively of plant. It was sin the 1970s that Clarins began to gain its global recognition, entering stories in the Untied States and abroad.

In 1990, Clarins was named as the No.1 high-end face skincare treatment brand in Europe, a title that it retains till this day. The first makeup products by Clarins hit the market in 1991, carrying the tagline of ‘Clarins, it’s all about you’. At the same time, Clarins also released their first anti-pollution product range to meet the needs of the modern consumer.
The 1990s saw Clarins acquire a stake in Thierry Mugler Couture, leading to the creation of Thierry Mugler parfums, which also launched the Clarins Group. The collaboration with Thierry Mugler led to the creation of the infamous Angel fragrance that remains a best-selling today.

After the original beauty institute in Paris, it’s no surprise that Clarins was quick to establish a network of international Clarins Skin Spas across the world. These spas exclusively use Clarins products, with every spa experience including the customer learning more about how to protect their skin.
Fast forward to today and Clarins – otherwise known as Clarins group – is one of the most recognisable luxury beauty brands in France and across the world. Their product range has expanded to include everything from cosmetics to perfume and skincare.

The brand is also the founder of the Courtin Arthritis Foundation, which launched in 1989 and made it possible for the brand to carry out extensive research on chronic inflammatory rheumatism and polyarthritis. The foundation is viewed as being responsible for most of the major advances made in rheumatoid arthritis research.
