How to Wear Neon Eye Makeup as Part of Your Everyday Look

One of the biggest trends in beauty right now is neon. It’s neon lights everywhere you look. The resurgence of the beauty trends is in no small part due to the Y2K aesthetic, which is making everyone experiment with colour. It’s no surprise that after almost 18 months of living through a pandemic, that people want to see colour back in their lives. Neon eyeshadow is an easy way to experiment with colour without having to buy a whole new makeup bag.

Everyone from influencers to beauty editors and celebrities are starting to show off their love for neon beauty. We’ve seen Selena Gomez stepping out in neon coral makeup with a focus on adding a pop of colour to the corner of her eyes. Jenna Nicole, the Los Angeles-based makeup artist, is the genius behind her neon makeup look. It’s not just the eyeshadow that was neon. The actress-turned-singer finished off her look with a bronze tan and lime-green nails.

Neon makeup on the runway

When we’re looking to predict the latest makeup trends, there’s one place that we always turn to. The runway. Yes, it’s usually where you’ll find next season’s fashion must-haves, but the makeup that the models wear is just as telling. Brands put just as much thought into their chosen makeup looks as the models and sets that they choose. Neon makeup is once again making an appearance on the runway of some of the world’s fashion capitals.

The Autumn/Winter 2021 show for Off-White was one of the first shows to put neon makeup at the front of its look. The fashion house created their neon makeup looks by using crayons in blue and neoprene orange shades, reflecting the colours that Virgil Abloh had used as the centre piece of the Off-White collection. The neon makeup looks were created by makeup artist Morgane Martini, who came up with the graphic neon eye makeup looks that reflected the aesthetic of the collection.

The Off-White collection was named ‘Laboratory of Fun’, which gave Martini the idea of using Virgil’s keen eye to create colourful neon makeup looks. Neon was chosen as the focal point for the makeup looks as it instantly brings your attention to the person’s face, in particular their eyes. Virgil and Martini used neon as a form of self-expression for each individual person – regardless of their age and personality.

While neon makeup is all over the runway, it’s slowly starting to make its way onto our social media feeds and into mainstream beauty trends. We know it can feel overwhelming when trying to experiment with a new trend, especially one as daring as neon colours. We’re sharing five of our top tips on how you can create the perfect neon eye makeup look that is contemporary and cool, while still being wearable.

Life is too short to wait for a special occasion to wear a neon eye makeup look! You want to make sure to bookmark this page to come back to when you decide to give neon makeup a try.

Here are our five tips for how to add neon eye shadow to your everyday makeup look:

Sometimes, less is more.

We know neon colours can be scary. Trust us. There’s a reason why we don’t wear them every day. Our number one piece of advice is to start small and that less is more. You don’t need to go crazy with your neon makeup or think too far out of the box. Start small and work your way up until you become more comfortable with using neon shades. You don’t need to use just neon shades either. You can use these colours to add little details or a pop of colour to your look, such as at your inner corner. You can add a coat of eyeliner or blend in a neon shade.

Sometimes it’s the smallest things that can have the biggest impact. Keep it simple when you get started and find ways to incorporate hints of neon into any makeup look.

You don’t need to go all out to jump on this trend.

Add a graphic twist

One of the biggest trends within the neon beauty niche is graphic elements. It’s an easy way to take a trend that’s synonymous with the ‘80s and to give it a modern and contemporary twist. Adding a graphic twist makes your makeup feel more like living art or an accessory than just a beauty trend.

Just like our first tip, you don’t need to go over the top with graphic makeup. It’s all about letting your creativity flow and trying something new. Graphic eye makeup is one of the must-try trends within the beauty industry. Adding a neon colour palette can give your look an edge.

The beauty of graphic is that anyone can give it a go. You don’t need to be a professional makeup artist to start experimenting with graphic eyeliner. One of the easiest ways to create this look is by using a tape to help you achieve a straight line – whatever shape you’re trying to create.

Make sure that you place the tape down correctly before going over it with an eyeliner pen or pencil to create the shape you need. You don’t need to be an artist to achieve the shape that you want. It’s an easy way to add a flair of creativity to your makeup look. Keep your graphic lines small if you want a subtle look or go all out for something bold.

Graphic eye makeup is a way of enhancing your features and changing your everyday makeup look without doing too much. If you want to keep it understated, use a neutral shade as your base to help the neon hues to pop.

Stay away from your lash line

It’s easy to get carried away when you’re doing neon makeup. You’ll want to keep a micellar water or makeup wipes on hand to clean up any mistakes or if you get a little too carried away. One area that you want to stay away from is the lash line when doing neon makeup. Unless you’re planning on heading out for a night on the town, you want to keep your lash line and lashes as natural as possible.

Curl your lashes and add a coat of your go-to mascara but stay away from adding a neon shade to your lash line. If you drop any of neon colour into your lash line, you can take a cotton bud with micellar water to help clear up any mistakes that might form.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with your lash line on the right occasion though. It can be an easy way to take your makeup routine to the next level, whether it’s with a blue mascara or adding a neon eyeliner to your lash line.

Keep your colours minimalistic

Neon is a bold statement for any occasion – especially when you’re using it with makeup. Unless you’re heading to Coachella, you want to be subtle and minimal with the colours that you choose. While colour contrasting is a growing trend, you want to choose neon shades that complement each other and work well together. It’s usually best to choose one or two neon shades to start with and to choose buildable colours instead of jumping off at the deep end.

One of the best ways to select colours is to keep it monochromatic, especially if you’re incorporating other trends like graphic lines. You want to make sure your colours work well together if you’re going outside of the monochromatic look. Unexpected shades like blue and warm orange can work perfectly well together – especially if you keep it simplistic.

Sometimes, it’s the simplest looks that have the greatest impact. If you use too much neon, it can make your eyeshadow look like you’re heading to an ‘80s-themed disco party. You don’t have to wear every neon shade in your eyeshadow palette to have a big impact.

Keep the rest of your look natural

The secret to pulling off a dramatic makeup look like neon eyeshadow is to balance out the rest of your makeup. This trick is one that we’re always talking about. If you want to make one part of your makeup ‘pop’, you want to keep the rest of it minimalistic.

Let your eyeshadow take centre stage with a clean and simplistic base look. The Off-White runway look didn’t include any blush or contour, but you can add these if you wish. You want to focus on creating a flawless base to help your eye makeup pop. It’s usually best to choose a ‘your lips but better’ lipstick shade and incorporate soft contouring into your makeup look.

Neon makeup shouldn’t be scary. With these five tips, it couldn’t be easier to experiment with this beauty trend.
