Meet the 2022 Pantone Colour of the Year - Periwinkle

Goodbye 2021. Hello 2022. Every year, Pantone makes a daring statement about which shade they believe is going to be the so-called ‘colour of the year’. It’s easy to shrug it off and assume it’s a marketing ploy, but the Pantone colour of the year has always been an announcement with its finger on the pulse. When a shade is named as the Pantone colour of the year, it starts appearing everywhere you look.

2022’s colour of the year is described as “a dynamic periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet red undertone”. Pantone are calling the colour ‘Very Peri’ with a reference of PANTONE 17-3938. This shade is a new one for Pantone with the Executive Director and Vice President of the Pantone Colour Institute choosing the colour as it embraces the cautious optimism and uncertainty of a world emerging from a global pandemic.

We’re looking at the 2022 Pantone Colour of the Year and how you can incorporate it into your closet, including highlight a few of our favourite must-have products.

Why is periwinkle the colour of the year?

Pantone explained that periwinkle was chosen as the 2022 colour of the year as it defines the moment of time that we live in – putting our future in a new light. Periwinkle blue puts across the feelings that we all have for the future of 2022 and beyond.

It takes a year’s worth of research and trend forecasting for the Pantone Colour Institute to decide its colour of the year. The process starts in late Spring with the Institute taking inspiration from the worlds of fashion and sport. Pantone have pointed out the influence of the gaming world on the choice of ‘Very Peri’ as gaming platforms become even more popular and the metaverse breaks into the mainstream.

Periwinkle is the 2022 colour of the year as it reflects what’s happening in the world around us right now. It takes the faithfulness of blue and blends it with the excitement and energy that comes from red. The warmth of the blue hues creates an empowering colour that represents the idea of embracing the new year ahead.

What periwinkle tells us about 2022

The 2022 choice is a unique one. Pantone hasn’t been afraid to think outside the box. After naming two colours as the ‘colour of the year’ for 2021, they’ve changed it up by creating a custom colour to represent the world right now for their 2022 colour.

According to Pantone, the shade ‘Very Peri’ was created for its “dynamic presence that encourages creativity and imaginative expression”, primarily due to its connection with the digital world and our modern lifestyle with the metaverse and NFTs.

The annual Colour of the Year is named in recognition of the role that colour plays in the way we communicate with each other and express ideas. The decision to make a new shade that fuses together red, violet, and blue is a deliberate choice that represents expanding the possibilities and potential of our future.

Periwinkle and the world of fashion and beauty

So how can we expect to see periwinkle in 2022 trends? It’s blend of blue, red, and violet hues makes universally flattering.
