The Easy French Braid Hack Taking Over TikTok

TikTok is our number one source of beauty inspiration. It’s where we go when we’re on the hunt for the best hair hacks. When we first came across this French braid hack, designed to hide greasy roots, we instantly fell head over heels.

TikTok has been the home of some of the biggest hair trends of 2021, including heatless curls and ‘90s-inspired buns. The short video format of TikTok means that it’s easy to follow hair tutorials without having to watch an entire YouTube video.

This French braid hack is one of the easiest to follow and the ideal look for days when you don’t have time to wash your hair. We’re telling you everything that you need to know about this hair hack and how you can recreate it for an effortlessly chic look.

Greasy hair is a part of life. Unless you’re blessed with a healthy scalp, your hair might get greasy the day after shampooing. No one wants to overwash their hair and strip it of its natural oils, but what can you do to hide greasy hair? Enter the French braid hack. It’s the perfect alternative to excessively using dry shampoo or trying to hide your hair with heat styling.

This easy hair tutorial teaches you everything that you need to know to conceal your greasy roots and give it a new lease of life. Wave goodbye to trying to hide your hair under a baseball cap or layers of dry shampoo. What we love about this hair hack is how easy it is to recreate at home. You don’t need to worry about complicated braiding that will leave you feel like you’ve just done an arm workout.

Unlike French plaits, this braid is easy to do and beginner friendly. You can use it after going to the gym or if you oversleep and miss your alarm.

This hair hack trend was started by the TikTok user @sar___h1 who talked her 26,000 followers through an easy-to-follow hack to hide greasy roots with a chic faux-French braid that anyone can do. Sarah promoted the video as solving the problem of “greasy hair? Can’t do French plaits?”.

You can watch Sarah’s easy-to-follow TikTok tutorial above or follow our write up below, if you prefer to take it a little slower. The original video now has over 184k likes and has been shared over 4000 times. Sarah’s account is full of effortlessly chic hair tutorials if you want to build your skills and say goodbye to a ponytail.

The easiest way to start this hair hack is to put your hair down, letting it frame your face. For an elevated look, you want to part your hair in the middle, taking two small sections of your hair. While Sarah left a smaller section of your hair out from the look, you might decide to use all your hair if it’s very greasy.

While your head is down, start by plating the first small section into a slim braid. Carry on braiding the hair until you reach the back of the crown of your hair. For a seamless look, skip using a hair bauble and choose an elastic instead that matches the colour of your hair. Use a few hair pins to attach the braid in place at the back of your hair.

Once you have the first braid in place, repeat the previous step for the other section of hair. You want to try and keep the two braids as even as possible, unless you prefer a messy and more natural look. It’s up to you to decide how sleek you want the finish to be.

Here is where the magic starts to happen. You want to use your fingertips to start loosening the braids slightly, making them appear like Dutch braids. Once they’ve loosened, you can ruffle them to make them look closer to a traditional French braid.

It’s as easy as that. With over two million views, it’s clear we’re not the only ones who have fallen in love with this hair style. Sarah’s comment section is full of praise for her easy hair hack, with her one of followers saying that it was the “best thing I’ve ever seen”.

The next time you have greasy hair or want to skip a wash, give this hair hack a try. It’s perfect for autumn and winter to keep your hair hydrated by letting you go longer without having to wash your hair.
