Why Copper is the Hair Trend of 2021

Change the hair. Change the woman. It’s a mantra that we live by.

Copper hair is one of the most daring but wearable shades that you can choose when you decide to transform your look. One of the most famous copper hair moments came in Luc Besson’s 1997 classic sci-fi film ‘The Fifth Element’, when the movie’s hairstylist managed to convince Milla Jovovich to dye her hair a bright copper shade.

Jovovich dyed her hair copper and as they say…the rest is history.

The beauty of the copper hue made Jovovich’s look timeless. As though she was from ancient Greek, while still looking as though she was from lightyears in the future. There’s something about copper red that is equal parts timeless and unnatural. It’s a shade that belongs to folklore and fairytale.

The red copper hair trend is one of our favourites. Why? It’s one that almost everyone can jump on. Red is a universally flattering shade, meaning that there is a hue out there that will work for you. It’s all about working with your skin’s undertones to find the shade of red that will complement your features and brighten your complexion.

We’re taking a look at the hottest hair colour trend of 2021 to help you determine whether it’s time to go for a Sansa Stark inspired look. Our Instagram feed is full of celebrities who are giving the look a try, making us think that this trend is here for the long-term.

How to find the best copper shade for you

Start by looking at your wrists to determine the undertones of your skin. If you have cool undertones, you’ll see blue and purple veins. If you have neutral undertones, you’ll see green and blue. Green and olive hues are a sign of warm undertones to your skin. If you have warm tones to your skin, you’ll naturally have a golden (or sometimes red) tint to your skin. Cooler tones tend to take on a more blue or violent tint to their skin. If you can’t figure out which you are then the chances are that you’re right in the middle as a neutral hue.

Once you know your undertones, go and meet your stylist to talk about finding the perfect complementary shade. You also don’t want to forget to ask them about the best way to maintain your new copper colour. Your salon will usually have a product line that they can recommend that works with the specific formula and dye that they used to achieve your copper hue.

One of the most popular hues for copper shades is a bright-auburn. Part of the popularity behind these copper shades is that they’re exciting, unexpected, and something different. All you have to do is look at how popular the #copperhair is on TikTok. The app dominates all the trends and usually calls the shots on what’s hot and what’s not. The hashtag has over 25 million views and climbing. We’d call that a trend.

Why has copper hair become a trend

There’s a reason why women often change their hair out of the blue. It’s mainly to be able to gain some sense of control over their life. Do you remember the early weeks and months of the pandemic? How many of your friends and family did you see using box dyes to change their hair? At one stage, box dye was one of the hardest beauty products to track down as we all found ways of trying to survive without our trusty hair stylist.

When we get emotional, our hair is the first thing we reach for to control. It’s why we often say that we feel like “pulling our hair out” when we’re having a bad day. If you’re looking to change your outlook on life and shake up your look, copper hair might be just what you’re looking for.

Plenty of celebrities turned to the trend during the pandemic, including Bella Hadid who saw in 2021 with a Ginger Spice-inspired copper highlight look. Her sister Gigi quickly jumped on the trend, posting a photo with long copper auburn hair after her post-maternity debut back on the runway.

Like the Hadid sisters have shown, you don’t have to jump off on the deep end with the copper trend. If you have brunette hair, you can even experiment with the hue by using balayage to help add a copper undertone to your hair without making too much of a statement.
