Why Sustainable Beauty is here to stay

We all know that we must do our part to preserve our beautiful planet. Many brands nowadays focus on producing products responsibly. This is also the case in the beauty industry. Several trends have already been developed, which can be used to maintain sustainable beauty. We would like to discuss some of these trends so that you can be as good informed as possible and that you know how to buy sustainable beauty products. That way, you’re able to contribute to the sustainable beauty industry.

Why is a responsible beauty industry important?

Acting responsibly is becoming increasingly important as we all want to stop global warming. We would like to enjoy the earth for as long as possible, so we will also have to pay better attention to the products we purchase. More and more people are looking for responsible products. The beauty industry is huge, and many brands are involved in it. Consumers of beauty products increasingly expect eco-friendly beauty products, so the market for green beauty products is also growing more and more.

Printing packaging with soy ink

We start right off with a green trend that many people don’t know about yet. In fact, a small part of the beauty industry uses soy ink on the packaging of the products. This type of ink is extracted from soybeans. Unlike petroleum-based ink, soy ink is biodegradable. Soy ink has been around for a long time, as it was invented back in 1970. Today, as many as one-third of American newspapers use soy ink. A Korean skincare brand called Dr. Ceuracle's also prints the labels of their products with soy ink. In this way, toxic emissions are minimized. It also makes recycling the packaging easier.

Using natural ingredients

Many skincare products and other beauty products you wash off your skin after use. When you do this, chemicals are not broken down, but end up in water supplies and in the ocean. This affects not only our own health, but also sea life. Natural ingredients are not only better for the environment, but also for you skin itself. Therefore, it’s wise to look at the ingredient list of a product before purchasing or using it. Below we have compiled a list of some different natural ingredients that are good for you as a user and for the environment.

- Essential oils, such as orange oil, jojoba oil and lavender oil;
- Herbal, floral and plant extracts, such as aloe vera, lavender, calendula, lemongrass, white tea, karanja and Icelandic herbs;
- Natural emulsifiers, such as beeswax and wool wax;
- Natural dyes, such as E100 derived from turmeric;
- Natural fragrances, such as lavender oil, rose petals and rosemary;
- Vegetable fats and oils, such as argan oil and shea butter.

Production of biodegradable products

What many people think about when it comes to acting responsibly is recycling. This is for a reason, as it’s a very important part of treating the earth responsibly. Not all beauty industry packaging is recyclable yet, but it’s becoming more so. In fact, many beauty brands are switching to biodegradable and recyclable packaging. By being able to reuse packaging materials over and over again, we don’t need as much new material as we’re using now, which is a lot better for the environment. Try to look for beauty products with recyclable packaging as much as possible. In this simple way, you are already contributing to improving the environment.

Using less water in the ingredients

Water is a very inexpensive ingredient. Not for nothing do many manufacturers of skin care products use a lot of water in producing them. This not only means that our skin doesn’t get all the nutrients it needs, but the fact that such a large amount of water is being used is also bad for the environment. Therefore, try to look for skin-care products that don’t contain water. Such products come often in the form of a powder. You only need to add a little water yourself, which is ultimately more beneficial for the environment.

Go for solid liquids

Most people use liquid products. Think of soap, shampoo and conditioner. However, solid liquids are becoming more popular. For example, facial cleansing bars and shampoo bars are increasingly available these days. Not only do they take up little space, but they are also better for the environment. This is because a shampoo bar, for example, is equivalent to as many as ten bottles of liquid shampoo. Also, the packaging of solid liquids is often made of environmentally friendly materials. A well-known brand that sells solid liquids is LUSH. Their solid liquids include face serums, moisturizers, face wash, foundation and perfume.

Search for refillable containers

One of the biggest polluting factors in the beauty industry is the production of packaging. Fortunately, a solution to this has been found and is becoming increasingly common, namely refillable packaging. A lot of products today are available with the option to refill them when they run out. Think of makeup such as lipstick, foundation and eyeshadow. Even in the area of skin-care products, this option is often available. When you choose refillable packaging, you only need to buy the product packaged in the much-needed material when buying a new one. You can put the product in the refillable container at home, making it easy to use. By applying this solution to many different products, a lot of packaging material is saved, and we are all reducing environmental pollution.

As you can see, there are many different options you can use to help maintain a responsible beauty industry. The more people use the responsible options, the more brands are likely to respond to this need by producing in a responsible way. When we use as little packaging as possible, make products from natural ingredients and waste as little water as possible, the beauty industry can become more and more sustainable, and we can enjoy all the beautiful products with peace of mind.
