When we’re talking about eye makeup, it’s worth remembering that it accounts for all the makeup in your eye area, including your brows. The first step to making your eyes appear larger is to lift your eyebrows by applying concealer along the brow bone to give the appearance of a natural highlighter.
Instead of reaching for your tried and tested black eyeliner first, ditch it in favour of a white eyeliner. A white liner is the secret to opening your eyes and making them appear wider. You want to start by applying the white liner to the inner corner of your eye before carrying it down along your lower lash line to the corner of your eye.
Take a transition shade – such as a caramel hue – and gently blend it into your crease. You want to make sure that you’re working in upward motions to help lift your eyes and give the illusion of them being larger in size.
Now you can take your favourite liquid eyeliner and create a cat eye. You want to aim to create as smooth a line as possible, working from the inner corner and outwards on a curve. The line should gradually become thicker as you move away from the inner corner and towards the flick. You want to avoid making the flick too thick as this can make your eyes appear smaller. The flick should be proportional with your eyes.
Take your eyeliner and carry it down through the outer corner of your eye, stopping before you hit the iris. Take your liquid eyeliner and use it to apply small lash-like strokes onto your skin. They should look like eyelashes and start from the line you just made.
Grab a pair of false eyelashes and apply them directly above your natural lashes. You can use an eyelash curler for a more natural finish and to help blend your natural and false lashes together. If you want a little extra volume, use a coat of mascara to blend everything together.
If you’re looking to make your eyes smaller, you’ll essentially be doing the opposite of everything in the list above. Start by taking a black kohl liner and applying it to your lower lash line.
Take a dark neutral shade and apply it all over your eyelid using a shader brush, blending the colour into your crease. Using your liquid eyeliner, apply a medium-size line from the inner corner to the end of your eye.
Unlike the makeup look below, you want to end your eyeliner when you reach the corner of your eye. You don’t want to add a flick to the end. Instead, take your liquid eyeliner and carry the line down through the outer corner of your eye, stopping before your hit the iris.
You can decide to skip on eyeliner if you want a more natural and smaller looking eyes. Unlike the look above, you won’t be using false eyelashes. You can always apply a coat of mascara to lengthen your eyelashes.
We love using these makeup hacks to make our eyes appear larger or smaller. If you’re going for a natural look, we think the hack for larger eyes is the perfect way to show off your liquid eyeliner and to help make your lipstick pop. If you want a more lowkey look, the smaller eye look is ideal for every day use.
