The Makeup Battle Between Classic Black and Navy Blue Eyeliner

Are you getting tired of your makeup routine and want to try something new? Most of us fall into the routine of applying the same makeup products every single day. You probably don’t want to go too far out of your comfort zone, but still want to make a change. If that sounds like you, we may have just the trick!

Navy blue is the new black.

Okay, it’s a statement we hear a lot. First it was ‘pink is the new black’ then ‘orange is the new black’ and now this. It’s time to swap your classic black eyeline for a navy blue shade.

While it might seem unconventional at first, we promise there is a method behind our madness. Just think of your closet. You’ll have a little black dress hanging next to a pair of navy blue jeans. Both are just as classic and versatile as each other. When you think of timelessness and sophistication – black and navy blue are on equal footing.

This navy blue eyeliner trend hasn’t come out of nowhere. Thanks to the pandemic, we’re all shifting our focus to our eye makeup routine, looking for ways to inject a subtle amount of colour and change up our look without going too wild. Wearing a face mask means that our eye makeup is even more important than ever before.

We’re taking a look at the navy blue eyeliner trend to help you determine if it’s the right one for you. Spoiler alert: It’s universally flattering, easy to use, and will help your eyes pop.

Navy blue eyeliner on the runway

We’re used to looking at the runways for the latest fashion trends, but have you ever thought of looking there for the up and coming beauty trends? Designers put just as much thought into the makeup their models wear as their set presentation. We saw the phenomena of navy blue eyeliner at several runway collections for luxury designer brands.

It’s interesting that both the brands we’re about to mention have their own luxury makeup lines, which they promote during their runway shows. If you need a sign that navy eyeliner is the next big thing – this is it.

Chanel sent its models down the catwalk wearing black winged eyeliner that had an unexpected twist with a low flick of navy blue shadow. While it’s not exactly an everyday navy blue eyeliner look, you can see the influencer of the trend. The navy blue added a lighter hue of colour that wasn’t as harsh against the skin.
If Chanel is doing it, you know it’s a trend.

Over at Dior, the resident makeup artist Peter Philips was using a different twist on the navy blue and black colour combination. He accentuated the model’s gaze by using lines of cool midnight blue that added both softness and density to the look. This idea perfectly encapsulates why we like navy blue. It’s equal part soft and daring. There’s no denying that black eyeliner shades can often be too harsh, with navy blue representing a softer alternative that gives you a similar aesthetic but with a softer tone.

Do you want to steal the Dior look and channel your inner Cara Delevingne? Pick up the  ‘5 Couleurs Couture Eyeshadow Palette’ by Dior in the name ‘Denim’. While the five colours are inspired by the shades and textures of blue jeans, it’s the dark indigo shadow that you want to use for this look.

Wearing blue navy eyeliner in everyday life

Okay, raise your hands if you’ve created a ‘zoom makeup’ routine. So, all of us then? Black eyeliner can give you the illusion of panda eyes if you apply it with a heavy hand. Using a blue navy shade instead will give you the same defined look without risking a bad lighting situation making it look like you’ve been crying.

Celebrity makeup artist Tasha Reiko Brown, who works with the likes of Alicia Keys, sweats by using a smudged navy blue eyeliner to create a Zoom makeup look. The makeup artist uses Chanel’s ‘Marine’ stylo yeux pencil to create the subtle but distinctive definition. Wearing navy blue instead of black gives your makeup look a modern twist and a subtle pop of colour that isn’t overwhelming. If you want to keep your look clean and sophisticated, but with a ‘cool’ factor to it – just swap out black for navy blue.

What we love about this beauty trend is that it doesn’t involve changing how you apply your eyeliner. Not everyone wants to get as adventurous as a reverse cat eyeliner look. All you have to do is switch out to the navy blue shade of your favourite eyeliner. Most brands will offer it as an alternative shade to classic black, especially as more pastel and bold shades becoming popular amongst beauty influencers.

Finding the right shade of navy blue for your makeup

The only challenge you’ll face with this trend is finding the right navy blue shade for you. The good news is that almost every hue is universally flattering, so it’s a case of choosing a shade that works for your mood and personality. Navy blue is a more common eyeliner shade than you might expect, meaning that you have plenty of options to choose from when it comes to the finish and hue of your navy blue eyeliner.

If you want something bolder and daring, look for a navy blue eyeliner that is bolder in its hue with a metallic finish. This style of eyeliner can help elevate your eye look without going too far out of your comfort zone. It’s also an easy way to carry the trend through to the holiday season or to wear it for a special occasion.

If you want something that is both classic and contemporary, keep an eye out for a deeper and richer shade of navy blue.

Whatever shade of navy blue you choose, you want to use it with lighter eyeshadow shades that help the richer tone of your navy to stand out and be the star of the show. If you’re wearing navy blue eyeliner, you want everyone to know you’re wearing it. Why be different if you don’t stand out?

One of our favourite ways to wear navy blue eyeliner is with a natural makeup look, nude lipstick, and a light pink bush to let the eyeliner do all the talking.

Navy blue eyeliner adds an instant layer of chic to your look. It’s what Blair Waldorf would wear if she was a beauty influencer. We think this shade is also the perfect transitional hue if you’ve been wearing pastel eyeliner through the summer. There are dozens of navy blue eyeliners available, whether you’ve got the budget for Chanel or NYX.
