How to Find Your Perfect Eyebrow Colour

If eyes are the window to your soul, then your eyebrows are the curtains. They frame your face and can change your look with just one stroke of product. There are dozens of eyebrow colours and products for you to choose from – whether you prefer to use a brow pencil, gel, or a wax. Amongst all the different formulas and product types, it can be even more confusing to find the right eyebrow colour that compliments your hair and skin.

Eyebrow trends are always evolving but having freshly groomed brows is an essential part of any beauty routine. With evolving trends comes more pressure to perfect your eyebrows. They should be thick, without being bushy. You should have an arch, without looking like a cartoon character. There are so many different aspects of your eyebrows to consider.

A quick look on Instagram or Pinterest will show you that there is more than one way to style your eyebrows. With the ever-growing range of products and colours to choose from, you can transform yourself into a different person by changing the shape of your eyebrows. The products and shades that you use will make or break your eyebrow style. While it’ll take some trial and error to find your perfect eyebrow shape, you want to consider the colour that you use.

Eyebrows are one part of your beauty routine where you can’t take a ‘one size fits all approach’. While anyone can wear a red lipstick or glitter eyeshadow, eyebrow colours are in a league of their own. Your eyebrows are the most personal part of your beauty routine. Our guide walks you through the process of finding the perfect eyebrow colour.

Different Types of Eyebrow Products

Before we jump into what factors determine your perfect eyebrow colour, you want to consider what type of eyeshadow product works best for you. While there are always new eyebrow product shitting the market, there are three types that are the most popular.

·     Brow Pencils are the most popular choice and can give you a natural-looking eyebrow shape with a soft touch of colour. You can also use this as a base for your powder. This product is ideal for those who are looking to fill in the gaps of their brows, along with filling out the tail to sculpt a new shape. You want to use the pencil to create hair-like strokes that mimic the appearance of your natural brow hairs. This product is a must-have for beginners, but you want to be mindful to use a lighter hand while applying the pigment.

·     Brow Pomades give you a bold eyebrow shape, adding drama and definition to your look. With a pomade, your brows will stay in place all day long. Anyone can use a pomade. If you have sparse brows, a pomade can help you quickly fill them in. If you have thicker brows, the pomade can give you a bold look and refined shape. You’ll need to use an angled brush with stiff bristles to apply the pomade. For a natural look, you want to use light strokes, before going in with a spoolie to soften the appearance of your brows.

·     Brow Powders can fill in sparse areas of your brow, giving you a softer effect than a pencil or pomade. You can use a powder to set your brow pencil and to avoid any smudging throughout the day. If you want a softer or more natural look, a powder is the perfect product for you. You may want to avoid this type of brow product if you have drier skin, as it can attach itself to patches of dry skin and give your brows an artificial look.

Skin Tone + Hair

When choosing your eyebrow colour, you want to consider your skin tone and hair colour. It’s always best to look at the colour of your roots, instead of your ends. There are certain colours you want to avoid, depending on your complexion. If you have snow-white skin, a black brow pencil will be too harsh against your pale skin tone. If you have a deeper complexion, a lighter pomade may not appear against your skin due to your darker pigmentation.

One common misconception is that you choose your eyebrow colour solely based off your hair colour. Just because you’ re brunette ,it doesn’t mean that the first brown brow wax you see if the right choice for you. The undertones of your hair are just as important. Your brunette hair might have red, caramel, or blonde undertones. These same undertones should come through in the brow colour that you choose.

Your hair texture can also help you decide which brow colour is right for you. If you have denser brow hairs, you’ll want to look for a colour with a darker pigment. If you have finer hair, you want to keep your eyebrows looking light with softer colour choice.

Another thing worth considering is the shape and size of your forehead. If you have a smaller face, your brow colour should be on the softer side, while a larger forehead can accommodate a deeper brow colour. You want to balance out all these factors while deciding which brow colour works with your hair and skin tone.

Lighter is Almost Always Best

Avoid the temptation to go for a darker colour than your natural hair shade. Ideally, you want your brow colour to be one shade lighter than your hair, while complementing the undertones of your skin. When you’re looking at the colour of your brows, you want to consider the shadow that forms between each brow hair. It’s this colour that you want to replicate through your brow products.

Choosing a lighter shade will give you a more natural look, as the product will blend with your natural brow hairs to avoid an artificial look. If you choose a shade that is darker than your brows, it can look as though you’re filling in the gap between your brow hairs and the pigment can be more noticeable. If you want to avoid making it look like you’ve drawn on your brows, you want to focus on finding a lighter colour.

You may think that you need to find an exact match to your natural eyebrow colour – but this can be counterproductive. Using an exact match can end up making your brows appear flat, with a block shape. A lighter shade will accentuate the natural shadows of your brows, giving them added definition and avoid an artificial appearance.

Focus on Neutral and Cool-Toned Brow Colours

If you’re not sure which undertone to choose, it’s always best to go with a neutral or cool-toned brow shade. As a general rule, the fairer your skin is, the cooler your brow colour should be. Eyebrow colours are generally more attractive if they have a colder undertone.

When you’re struggling to choose between warm or cool tones, you can go with a safer choice. A neutral-tone light brown suits almost every skin tone or hair colour. With a taupe brown shade, you can buildup the colour to get your desired look, while adding to the density and shape of your brow.

One exception is if you have a yellow undertone to your skin. In this case, you want to choose a warmer brow shade, otherwise this can give your brows an artificial or ashy grey look.

If you’re a redhead, the rules are different again. You’ll fall into the one category who should always choose a warmer brow colour to match your hair. While this is true, don’t forget that the purpose of your eyebrow colour is to mimic the appearance of the shadows, and not your actual brow hair.

The Golden Rule

If there’s one thing you want to take away from this article, it’s the golden rule. Your brow colour should be a shade lighter(and usually cooler) than your natural brow hairs. When your brows are denser, you can get away with a heavier hand while applying your brow products. If you use a lighter shade, you can avoid giving your brows a box shape. If you have sparser eyebrows, you need to take a lighter hand with your products, as otherwise your eyebrows will appear artificial.

Amongst all the eyebrow trends, don’t forget how important the feature is to your face. Your brows shape your face and can change your appearance within the blink of an eye. If you find the shape and colour that works for you, stick to it. You don’t have to follow these rules, they’re not set in snow. Everyone’s complexion and skin tone has its own nuances.

Your eyebrows are personal to you – after all, they’re sisters, not twins.

It may take some trial and error to find the eyebrow colour that is your perfect match, but when you have it, bulk buy it! Your brow products will make or break your makeup look.
