The most popular skincare questions that Gen Z have

If you’re a Gen Z-er, you’ve likely got a few skincare related questions flying around your head. No worries. We’re here to help. We’re taking a look at the most popular questions that Gen Z have, letting them know which products are worth investing in, and what advice a dermatologist would give them on the most common issues.

Q: What products should I have in my skincare routine?

The first non-negotiable for your skincare routine is a gentle cleanser that will exfoliate your skin and remove dead skin cells. If you’re wearing makeup, don’t forget that you need to remove it as well. You might decide to use a double cleansing method with both a makeup remover and a separate cleansing product.

When your skin is full of impurities and dead skin cells, it starts to become dull and can be troubled with breakouts. Your cleanser will remove these impurities and help brighten your skin’s complexion, while helping your skin absorb the active ingredients in your other skincare products.

Toners are one product that often gets given a bad reputation. Look for one with a water-based formula and incorporate it into your routine to help brighten your face and get rid of any left-over impurities in your skin.
You can add in a serum for a targeted treatment to help address any specific skincare concerns that you have.
Finish off your routine with a hydrating moisture that restore your skin’s pH balance and helps to boost your skin’s protective barrier. Even if you oily skin and are prone to breakouts, you want to be using a moisturizer.

Q: How can I get rid of my acne?

Acne is something that everyone deals with – whether it’s genetic or hormonal. It’s amongst the most common skin problems and one that can be painful to deal with. We’ve deal with confidence issues as a result of acne. One of the best things you can do to tackle your acne is to create a consistent skincare routine that you follow. You won’t see results overnight, but it’s worth sticking to. After 4-6 weeks of consistently following your routine, you can expect to see a noticeable difference in the condition of your skin.

You can also incorporate specific ingredients – like salicylic acid – into your skincare routine to help tackle the root cause of your acne. Make sure that you’re always removing your makeup and cleansing your skin. Look out for a glycolic toner and ensure that your skin is getting the hydration and moisture that it needs to help soothe the redness and irritation that acne causes your skin.

Q: What active ingredients should I be using as part of my skincare routine?

This is a million dollar question and one that can’t answer for you. Active ingredients are the powerhouse behind your skincare routine and allow you to tailor your routine to address your specific concerns. Every active ingredient has a purpose behind it – whether it’s plumping your skin, removing dead skin cells, or healing acne scarring. The best thing you can do is research the active ingredients that are best to use for your specific skin type or concerns.

It’s easy to get caught up thinking that you need to use every single active ingredients. Sometimes, less is more. It’s also worth researching which active ingredients can and can’t be used together. Active ingredients are the most powerful part of your skincare products, and some can react badly to each other.

Three of the most popular active ingredients are Hyaluronic Acid, Glycolic, and Vitamin C. These are the most common ones for Gen Z to use and can help you achieve a healthy glow to your skin.

Vitamin C works to brighten your complexion, unlocking your skin’s inner radiance while helping to relieve dull and tired-looking skin. We also love Vitamin C for its antioxidant properties, helping to protect your skin from free radical damage to prevent premature aging and breakouts.

Glycolic is another brightening active ingredient and is ideal for using with your evening skincare routine as a toner or serum.

Hyaluronic acid is a hero ingredient and one that everyone is talking about. It can hold up to thousand times its weight in water and works for every skin type as the ultimate hydrating ingredient. One universal skincare product that everyone should be using is a hyaluronic acid serum.

Q: What percentage should I be using with my Retinol, Vitamin C, and Hyaluronic Acid products?

The golden rule of thumb is to always start on the lower end of the percentage for any product. If you go in at the deep end, your skin might take a reaction and you can end up doing more harm than good. It’s best to start slowly and gradually work your way up, especially if you have sensitive skin.

You want to start by slowly introducing the ingredient to your skincare routine – especially retinol. Start by using a lower percentage of the active ingredient once or twice a week to allow your skin to build up its tolerance before gradually increasing your use.

As your skin becomes more familiar and acclimates to the ingredient, you can gradually raise the percentage until you find one that you’re happy with and that gives you the results you’re looking for.

The above advice is mostly relevant for Retinol and Vitamin C. You’ll want to start as low as possible with retinol, while 10% is usually a good percentage to start with for vitamin C. When it comes to hyaluronic acid, you can use any percentage that you like. If you have sensitive skin, it’s still worth going a little lower to start with.
